Steven Cohen est un artiste, plasticien, performer et chorégraphe sud-africain né le 11 août 1962. De 1981 à 1984 il a fait un bachelor dans l’Art (Psychologie, Anglais et Littérature) à l’Université de Witwatersrand. En 1985, il est sorti diplômé de la Ruth Prowse School of Art à Capetown, en Afrique du Sud. Puis de 1985 à 1987 il a fait un service militaire obligatoire dans la South African Defense Force.
En juin 2002, Steven Cohen avec son ami Elu a habité à La Rochelle pendant un an afin de faire des recherches chorégraphiques avec Ballet Atlantique et Régine Chopinot. Ses recherches ont abouti à un spectacle mélangeant danse et multimédia s’intitulant « I wouldn’t be seen dead in that! ». Le spectacle avec 6 danseurs dure 55 minutes et est sorti à La Rochelle les 7, 8 et 9 février 2003. Aujourd’hui il habite à Lille.
Steven Cohen est un narcissique révulsé. Il est à la fois un juif croyant, un Africain blanc et un homosexuel qui aime bien se travestir. A travers ses sculptures extravagantes, ses performances égocentriques et déguisements « osés », Steven Cohen essaye de trouver de divers moyens d’expressions pour traiter différentes questions identitaires, tabou aujourd’hui, comme le judaïsme, le racisme, l’homosexualité et l’identité ethnique.
Plus qu’un artiste, Steven Cohen est un grand provocateur. Ses performances sont souvent dans des lieux publiques symboliques (Trocadéro, Mémorial de la Shoah, Ground Zero, Bidonville de Johannesburg, …) où il se promène souvent nu et déguisé de costumes originaux de sa création.
Tout récemment, au Trocadéro à Paris, il est apparu avec un coq relié au sexe et a été arrêté par la police. Il sera jugé le 24 mars 2014.
